2023 Parliamentary Elections: Neighborhood-Based Analysis with Maps
The 2023 Parliamentary Elections offer a superficial picture when limited to nationwide percentages. However, when examined at the neighborhood level, a much more layered and interesting picture emerges. Through the 36 different maps on this page, you can see the distribution of the leading parties across Turkey, neighborhood-based preferences in metropolitan cities, the voting profiles of the most populous neighborhoods, and how voter demographics are reflected in the election results.
The maps make it possible to comparatively examine the elections not only in terms of political preferences but also in terms of population density, age groups, and regional trends.
The Alevi population living in the villages of Çorum, Amasya, Sivas, Tokat, Erzincan, and Kahramanmaras, although small in number, stands out on election maps. This cultural geography, not reflected in the district as a whole, becomes visible at the neighborhood level.
The Osmaniye, Kilis, Adana line and the Kayseri, Yozgat, Çorum, and Çankiri line stand out as the MHP's strong point. This area demonstrates how nationalist voter behavior is geographically clustered in Anatolia.
The Arab population of Siirt and Sanliurfa is very clearly oriented towards the AK Party. Regional identities and the historical ties of the parties significantly shaped the election results.
The frequently mentioned claim that "there are 3 million Kurds" specifically for Istanbul also appears to be a myth when looking at the maps. The Kurdish population certainly exists in Istanbul, but in terms of political visibility, it is much more dispersed and less dense than expected.
The fact that TIP received its highest number of votes in wealthy and educated areas is a very interesting detail for Turkish politics. This pattern disrupts the classic "workers' party = low-income voters" pattern. It appears that liberals and secular urban voters directed their protest and reactionary votes to TIP.
A look at the AKP and CHP vote distributions in Istanbul reveals a very interesting picture: Wealthy neighborhoods vote for the CHP, while poor neighborhoods vote for the AKP. This demonstrates that the concepts of left and right in Turkey operate very differently than in the West.
Perhaps this is precisely why the country has remained stagnant for decades. If educated and wealthy segments of society had voted for right-wing parties (or if right-wing parties had developed policies that appealed to these segments), Turkey's political landscape could have evolved in a completely different direction.
